William “Billy” J. Metcalf, 87, of Ohio, was peacefully welcomed home to his savior on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa, surrounded by love.
Bill came into the world on December 5, 1938, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, born to William Doyle and Connie B. (Mangrum) Metcalf. He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Marine Corps—an experience that became part of the foundation of who he was.
Bill spent time pursuing his education at Northwestern University, reflecting a lifelong curiosity and a willingness to learn, even as his path ultimately led him toward a life defined by skill, work, and lived experience.
On April 13, 1975, Bill married Anne Miller in Lily Lake, Illinois. Together, they built a life rooted in commitment, perseverance, and family. Bill was a man who worked with his hands and his heart, spending many years as a carpenter and cabinet maker before later working in trucking, always valuing honest labor and the quiet dignity it brought.
Beyond his work, Bill found meaning in pursuits that spoke to both his skill and his faith. He loved the outdoors—the stillness of hunting and the grounding rhythm of farming. He delighted in collecting model trains and found a deep sense of purpose in flight, serving as a pilot with Pilots of Christ, where flying became an act of service rather than simply a destination.
Horses held a special place in Bill’s life. He trained them with patience and respect, forming partnerships built on trust and understanding. He competed with them as well, finding fulfillment not only in performance, but in the bond between horse and rider—the unspoken communication, the shared work, the steady presence required of both. It was a world where Bill felt deeply at home.
Bill leaves behind his wife, Anne Metcalf, of Ohio; his children, Joanne (Tim) Rios of LaSalle, Nathan (Sarah) Metcalf of Bolingbrook, Kristina (Jeff) Rabacchi of Jacksonville, Florida, Justin Metcalf of Princeton, Jaimie Metcalf of Jacksonville, Florida, and Leah Metcalf of Ohio; one brother, Clifton (Norma) Metcalf of Lake Holcombe, Wisconsin; and many grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Aaron Metcalf; his brothers, William Mack and Howard Metcalf; and his grandson, Cadyn Metcalf—loved ones he now joins beyond this life.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held in April, a time to gather, remember, and celebrate a life well lived.
