Walnut, Illinois Carl Junior Gustafson, age 89, formerly of Walnut and Sterling, IL died Sunday September 6, 2015 at St. Margaret's Hospital in Spring Valley, IL.
Junior was born on October 13, 1925 in Walnut, IL, the son of Carl Albert and Florence M. (Griffin) Gustafson. He served in the United States Marines during World War II with the 5th Marine Division in the battle of Iwo Jima. He was united in marriage to Emma Lou Bohm on December 26, 1948 in Manlius, IL. She preceded him in death in July 1968. He then married Virginia Beattie Toms in Sterling, IL on November 26, 1976. Junior farmed and was a truck driver in the Walnut area during his lifetime. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Walnut and a 60 year member of the Walnut American Legion Post #179.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Gustafson of Sterling, IL; two daughters Sharon Gustafson of Walnut, IL, Carla (Pete) Kerr of Walnut, IL; one step son John (Nancy) Toms of Naperville, IL; three grandchildren Megan Kerr, Emma and Ethan Toms; two sisters Elaine Curtis of Claremore, OK; Betty Christiansen of Montross, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, 5 brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut,with the Rev. Brian Moore, pastor of the First Christian Church of Walnut, officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut . Burial will be in Walnut Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church of Walnut and Illinois Veterans Home Residents in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be sent to: www.garlandfuneralhome.com.
