Obituary

Caryl Grace Behrens, 92, passed away at St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford on June 18, 2023. Caryl was born on October 12, 1930, in Ohio, Illinois to Marvin and Beulah Ioder. She married Clinton Behrens on December 27, 1953.

Caryl was a lifelong teacher, beginning in 1954 teaching all eight grades at a small country school, then first thru third grades at Nelson Grade School and finally first grade at Walnut Grade School.  After teaching first grade at Walnut for over 35 years. Even in retirement, she could still be found substituting at Walnut for many years. Caryl was an active member of Red Oak United Methodist Church and Bryant Club. She enjoyed volunteering as an election judge and at the Walnut food pantry. Her social calendar was filled up till the week she passed.  She enjoyed dancing at the Elks Club weekly with her husband in their early years, antiquing often, visiting friends over coffee and playing bridge weekly. 

Caryl is survived by her children - Phyllis Donahue of Texas, Dave (Lois Claire) Behrens of Walnut, and Don (Karen) Behrens of Harmon;  Grandchildren, Chad Donahue of Florida, Bret (Casey) Donahue of Texas, Brandon (Allison) Behrens of North Dakota, Reid (Desiree) Behrens of Sterling, Grant Behrens of Colorado, Amber (Shawn) Werderman of Davenport, Michael (Jeanie) Behrens of Byron, Chris (Allison) Behrens of Wisconsin, and Heather (Rick) White of Davenport; 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister Edith Orazem of Minnesota; brothers, Harry Ioder of Walnut, Jim Ioder of Missouri, and Ned Ioder of Streator.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton; her daughter Linda Behrens; her parents, her son-in-law, J. David Donahue; 2 grandchildren; and sisters, Norma Cribb, and Betty Pillen.

There will be a private family gathering at the gravesite at a later date.  The public is invited to a luncheon at Red Oak United Methodist Church Monday, June 26, 2023 12:00 p.m. 

Memorials may be made in her memory to Red Oak United Methodist Church and Walnut Fire Department and Rescue.
