Charles Daniel Chriest, 78, life-long resident of Tampico, passed away on December 15, 2021, from kidney disease.
He was the first child of Charles and Eula Mae (Bruder) Chriest, born on February 24, 1943, in Sterling, Illinois. Known as "Charlie" to some, and as "Danny" to others and his family, he was known for his automotive mechanical expertise and worked in the operation of his parents' family business, Chriest Garage and Auto Sales, in both Tampico and Rock Falls, from the 1960's through the 1990's. He used his mechanic skills serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam during 1969-1970 as a helicopter repair man, completing his military service at the rank of Sergeant.
Survivors include his mother, Eula Mae Chriest of Tampico; children and grandchildren: Jennifer Chriest of Sterling; Cynthia (Jeffrey) Benzschawel of Madison, WI and their son, Ronan; Charles Chriest, Jr of Las Vegas, NV, and his children, Dina and Alaina; Alicia (Gerald) Thompson of Dixon and their children, Isabella, Madelyn, Olivia and North; Michael Chriest of Las Vegas, NV; and Bradley Chriest of Moorcroft, WY and his children, Aurora and Ruby; brothers and sisters, Ida Staelens of Sterling, Steven Chriest of Tampico, Anna (Randy) Wetzell of Tampico, and Timothy (Kathleen) Chriest of Aurora, IL.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Chriest; sister, Susan Mitchell; brother, Roger Chriest;, and, as infants, brother, Thomas Chriest and grandson, Seth Chriest.
Cremation rites have been accorded with the Garland Funeral Home in Tampico. Due to the current COVID pandemic, a memorial service will take place in spring or summer of 2022. A date and location will be announced at that time.
