Donald Rod Obituary
Donald Charles Rod, 80 of Amboy, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, August 2, 2016 surrounded by his family.
Donald was born December 17, 1935 in Charles Harris Hospital, Mendota, to Ross and Verna (Wendel) Rod, the youngest of four children. He grew up in Clarion Township and attended a one-room school. He graduated from Mendota High School in 1953 and joined the Illinois National Guard in 1958 in Ottawa and transferred to Sycamore for 6 years of service. He married Shirley M. Faber on September 22, 1957 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Moille. He was a lifelong farmer, starting in Clarion Township and then moving to East Grove Township in 1968 where he farmed the rest of his life. He was a member of the Ohio First Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council. He enjoyed helping people
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley of Amboy; two daughters, Marilyn (Andy) Geiger of Sterling and Marcia (Robert) Hartwig of Princeton; two sons, Martin (Jeanette) Rod of Amboy and Mark Rod of La Moille; thirteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Rod of Princeton; one sister-in-law, Patricia Rod of Mendota and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Eric Rod; two brothers, James and Alfred and two sisters-in-law, Pat Rod and Bobbie Rod.
Visitation will be Friday, August 5, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut and Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 9:00-10:00 A.M. at the Ohio First Lutheran Church. Funeral service will follow at 10:00 A.M. at the church with Reverend Gene Vincent officiating. Burial will follow at Van Orin Repose Cemetery in Van Orin, IL.
