Jean Mitchell

Jean Mitchell, 92, of Tampico, died on Monday, February 27, 2023 at Morningside of Sterling.

Jean was born on March 12, 1930 in Pekin, the daughter of Jefferson and Elizabeth (Golden) Waddell. She married Wayne Mitchell on August 8, 1948 in Manito, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 9, 2004. Jean was created for an amazing life. She was a housewife, farmed alongside her husband but most importantly she was a mother and grandmother. Her roles that she held closest to her heart. Her and Mitch enjoyed their lives together. Starting in Manito and then later moving to Tampico. Farming, fishing, traveling, playing cards, and making so many friends from different parts of their lives. She enjoyed putting puzzles together, playing cards until all hours of the night. She loved planting flowers and working in her yard. You could usually find her driving her golf cart around her meticulously groomed yard and admiring her duck pond that she took great pride in. She would always have a camera in her hand to capture life’s moments. As the sun would go down she would sit on her porch and admire her farm while the ducks quacked in the background. She was the matriarch of Mitchell Melons and enjoyed her time at the stand for 60 plus years and making lifelong friends along the way. Her life was full of happiness and love. Her greatest passion was her family and she has left so many legacies behind.

She is survived by one daughter, Peggy (Don) Burton of Sterling; one son, Doug (Jeanne) Mitchell of Tampico; one foster son, Johnnie (Pam) Rogers of Pekin; two sisters, Helen Ortley of Peoria, Barbara Waddell of Sun City West, AZ; two brothers, Bill (Louise) Waddell of Tremont, Jim Waddell of Manito; nine grandchildren, Lisa Kahn, Dave Burton, Andra Burton, Nyla (Steve) Mincey, Whitney (Brandon) Mitchell- DeWitte, Beth (Matt) Keegan, Brooke (Troy) Guidotti, William (Sarah) Rogers, Jonathon (Kelly) Rogers; 19 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Sid Waddell; one sister, Marilyn Garlish.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, March 5, 2023 from 2PM-4PM at Garland Funeral Home in Tampico. Funeral Services will take place at Garland Funeral Home of Tampico at 11AM on Monday, March 6, 2023 with Reverend Scott Porter, officiating. Burial will follow the funeral services and take place at Tampico Memorial Cemetery.
