Louis Gonigam Obituary

Location: Walnut, Illinois

 Louis E. Gonigam, 92 of rural Walnut died Wednesday November 1, 2017 at Heritage Health Care in Walnut.

He was the born the son of Louis E and Irene (Stockley) Gonigam, April 22, 1925, on the farm in rural Walnut that he grew up on and farmed his entire life. He was a 1943 graduate of Walnut High School and was a veteran serving in WW II on a carrier in the US Navy on a torpedo bomber in the Pacific. He married Geraldine Bourquin on December 20, 1947 in Walnut, and they would have celebrated their 70th anniversary next month. Louis was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Walnut and of the Knights of Columbus Council. He had been active in the Lee County Farm Bureau; a past member of the Walnut School Board; long time member of the Hamilton Twp Board; and a member of the Walnut American Legion Post.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine; two sons: Gary (Lisa) Gonigam of Lake Camalot, IL and Greg (Stacy) Gonigam of Walnut; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; one brother Gail (Hazel) Gonigam of Dixon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Carolyn Balagna; his brother-in-law, Aldo Balagna; and granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Gonigam.

Visitation will be held on Saturday November 4, 2017 from 9:30 - 11 AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Walnut, followed by the Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM with the Reverend Thomas Shaw officiating. Burial with military honors will conclude at Walnut Cemetery. Arrangements completed by the Garland Funeral Home, Walnut.
