Marilyn Birkey Obituary

WALNUT – Marilyn June Birkey, 88, of Walnut, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Thursday, March 28, 2024. Marilyn was born February 5, 1936, in Sheffield, the daughter of Elmer and Laura (Jensen) Frank. Marilyn married Ronald A. Birkey on February 8, 1959, in Manlius. He preceded her in death on October 29, 2004. Marilyn was an active member of Red Oak United Methodist Church in Walnut. She worked at Walnut Manor for many years, was a corn sorter at PAG, and worked in the lunchroom at the sale barn. Marilyn was a dedicated farm wife, election judge, and volunteer at the food pantry. She enjoyed family trips to Tomahawk, WI, Ladies Circle at church, and could often be found with a close group of friends, the WWW’s, the Widows and Widowers of Walnut, having dinner on Friday evenings. In her later years, she enjoyed puzzles, playing dominos, and spending time with grandchildren.

Survivors include four daughters, Lorie (David) Soderberg, of Tomahawk, WI and Houston, TX, Karen (Kevin) Freeman, of Walnut, Julie (Jeremy) Rediger, of Wyanet, and Debra (David) Janssen, of Nelson; one son, Joseph (Lou Ann) Birkey, of Princeton; eight grandchildren, Kyle Freeman (Liz Rogers), Ashley (Ky) Mariman, Andrew Birkey, Jessica (Logan) Wilde, Baylie Janssen (Jon Shippert), Gracie Janssen (Cole Stewart), and Brik and Brock Rediger; four great grandchildren, Hayden Freeman, and Gage, Remington, and Knox Mariman; sister-in-law, Nancy Frank, of Peru; brother-in-law, Harold Birkey, of AZ; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Marvin Frank; stepmother, Loretta Frank; and her beloved dog, “Sophia.”

Visitation will be held from 10:00am-12:00pm on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Garland Funeral Home in Walnut. Funeral service will follow at 12:00pm. Private graveside service will be held at Red Oak Cemetery in Walnut. Guests are invited to a luncheon immediately following the service at Red Oak United Methodist Church in Walnut. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Red Oak Cemetery or Walnut Fire Protection District. Special thanks to Marilyn's caregivers that allowed her to stay in the comfort of her home.
